In the early 1800s, Hannibal was a thriving town with a population of over 10,000. The town's gunsmiths and arms dealers were some of the most prosperous in the area. However, by 1861, Hannibal had become embroiled in the American Civil War. In that year, Union troops burned down the town's armory and all its businesses. One of the weapons involved in this event was a firearms t-shirt made from cotton twill fabric. This shirt became an iconic symbol of resistance against Union forces and helped to retard their advance into Hannibal.

It is located on the banks of the White River. Hannibal was founded in 1839 by Captured Indian Chief Joseph Smith and his wife Lucy as a trading post on the confluence of the White and Platte Rivers. In 1842 Hannibal was named for Hannibal Lector, an American general who fought in Mexico City duringthe Mexican War and later served as U.S. Minister to Spain under President James K Polk. The first school in town was built in 1840 bymasterbuilder John Haggerty and Mrs. Jno Haggerty with help from subscription In 1845 Carthage Female Seminary opened with Miss Jane Auld teaching mathematics and French; it closed in 1865 due to financial difficulties A new school building was constructed on what is now Main Street in 1850 by local contractor Wm Crampton The only non-residential structure erected within town limits until after World War II were two barns which housed a Methodist Episcopal church (1857) and a Mechanics Institute (1871). Hannibal is located in the now-defunct county of Cass County, Missouri. The community was named after Hannibal Smith, a settler in the area. By 1851, Hannibal had become an important railroad junction and its merchants thrived due to their connections with nearby cities. In 1871, Hannibal was incorporated as a city and quickly became one of Cass County's most important centers of commerce. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Hannibal experienced significant growth as a result of its role as an agricultural center and its location on the main route connecting eastern Missouri with Illinois.
