Hannibal is a small town in southwest Missouri, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. Hannibal is part of the Hannibal-St. Joseph metropolitan area. Hannibal is named after Hannibal Barca, an Carthaginian general who fought in the Punic Wars and helped to win that conflict's first victory against Rome. The community was organized on February 10, 1858, when a group of farmers met to discuss forming a village near Columbiana (now Shawnee) Creek. The name "Hannibal" was chosen because it sounded like "hannon," or a type of animal known for its strength and accuracy with guns. The community rapidly grew and by 1900 had a post office, schoolhouse, grocery store and sawmill providing goods to nearby towns such as Columbia and St. Joseph. By 1920 the community had two banks and six churches including one Congregationalist church which still operates today. A large cotton gin was built in 1922 by local resident Wernher Hirschwalds along with other commercial enterprises which helped make Hannibal one of the most prominent communities in Missouri during that time period. In 1928 it became one of only three towns in Missouri granted permission by then-Governor James Krieger to build their own airport In 1951 Hannibal consolidated with neighboring Columbia to form what is now known as the St Joseph–Columbia Metropolitan Area.
