Grandview was founded in 1835 by John Dutton and his wife Emily as a small village on the east side of what is now Grandview Heights Boulevard. The town grew up around agriculture and industry, but it became an important commercial center after the opening of Interstate 65 in 1965. The first settler in what would become Grandview were two families from Kentucky who arrived in 1835: the Beavers and Claiborne families. In 1845, John Dutton purchased 8 acres (3 ha) north of where he lived from James Moulton for $8 per acre ($2/ha). A few years later he donated another piece of land to the town for development; this piece included the present day intersection ofGrand View Boulevard and Illinois Avenue. In 1850, Dutton's son-in-law Jeremiah Newton established a flour mill on Harlan Road just south of where Illinois Avenue now intersects with Grand View Boulevard; this mill produced high-quality flour until 1914 when it closed due to competition from newer mills operating near Interstate 65%. The early settlers did not focus on growing crops but instead developed businesses that supplied their community with goods such as lumber, eggs, milk, fish traps and wagon wheels made out of local woods or hardwood trees blocks long ago exported to Great Britain from here transported overland across rough terrain much like today's rails connecting distant cities brick by brick

The first permanent settler in the area was James H. Callender, who arrived in 1837. The town of Grandview was founded in 1845 by Captain John S. Wolfe and his family. By 1860, there were over a hundred people living in the town. The town prospered until the early 20th century when it went into decline due to the influence of railroad transportation and other factors. In 1923, a new shopping center was built in Grandview and it has remained busy ever since.
