In 1838, John Cullum and his brother James founded the town of Grandview in what is now Cullum County, Missouri. The brothers were inspired to create a new community because they saw an opportunity to growing crops and build a trading post on the Missouri River. The town was named for George Washington Carver, who had donated land for the town in 1835. At first, the town consisted of just a few homes and a trading post. However, over time, Grandview grew into one of the most important communities in eastern Missouri. Today, Grandview remains a largely rural community with only a few scattered buildings remaining from its early days. However, there are many businesses and residences located in the settlement that continue to play an important role in cultural life in eastern Missouri. The history of Grandview is reflective of much of southeastern Missouri during its early years: It was founded by men who believed that agriculture would be the key to success hereabouts. In addition to their agricultural endeavors, Cullum and Carver also built roads and erected stores in order to provide goods and services necessary for local residents. These initiatives helped support growth while promoting trade between neighboring communities along the river. Migration continued throughout the 1840s as farmers began moving westward into newly opened open territory; this led to increased economic opportunities for those living near major riverside towns such as St Louis or Cairo. As these areas became more developed (and expensive), citizens turned their backs on farming methods altogether and began developing industry instead - which ultimately led to increased social unrest within these settlements due to competition from larger cities closer at hand (eastern Illinois notwithstanding). This latter trend was accelerated duringthe American Civil War when goods needed by soldiers suddenly flooded into eastern Missouri from Kansas City or other Great Lakes states at alarming rates - leaving little space for farmers back home who were struggling without any external assistance (a situation exacerbated by wartime prices increases). During this period too, Jim Crow laws discriminated against African Americans both inside Grandview itself as well as across southeastern Missouri generally; however, through efforts like cooperative extension work (conducted by county agents) ETAs like John Gorman managed to keep some semblance of social order despite these difficulties- even though race remained deeply entangled within economic life hereabouts
