In 1870, when Centralia became Champaign County's last fully independent municipality, prominent local attorney Harry Emerson Fenton suggested that the name "Centralia" be given to it so as not to confusion with other nearby municipalities such as Carbondale or Normal. Fenton's suggestion prevailed over objections from some residents who felt that their community would better serve by remaining under one name. In 1871 Centralia annexed all but two blocks of east ChampaignCounty while leaving intact overall boundaries between those counties - essentially creating a new city by annexing rural areas previously belonging only to Carbondale orNormal. That same year saw also another important event: Centralia bid farewell to its longtime mayor John Sibley after almost fifty years at the helm of one of MO.'s largest cities; he was succeeded by his son Amos Sibley Jr.. Amos Sibley Jr., later mayor from 1903 until his death in 1911, helped create modern infrastructure such as street lights and paved boulevards in downtown Centralia while also developing Centralia into one ofMO.'s most successful business communities throughout its eighty-year history."
