Grandview, Missouri was founded on October 10, 1836 by George Washington Crain and his wife Sarah. The town was named for the grand view from their property of the River Raisin. The first post office in Grandview was established on January 3, 1837. The population of Grandview increased rapidly during the early years, but until 1840 it had no school or hospital. In that year, a private donation allowed construction of a schoolhouse and a hospital were started. The first teacher in Grandview was Mrs. Ann Grieve who taught Kindergarten through High School. Mrs. Grieve is also considered to be the first female teacher in Missouri history. In 1842, Drury (a neighboring settlement) decided to move out of its own land and join Grandview as a town. On October 6th of that year, they voted to make Grandview an independent city with its own government and streets and buildings! By this time however, there were already over 100 people living in Grandview! The city soon grew quite populouse due to its diverse industry which included farming, lumbering and manufacturing as well as its many businesses such as mills, stores and theaters which continued to operate until the 1950s when most began closing down due to competition from larger towns within easy driving distance. Many famous residents of Grandview include: George Washington Crain (founder), Sarah Jowett Crain (first woman mayor), John Muhlenberg (Governor), Harry Truman (President), Eleanor Roosevelt (First Lady).
In 1821, Grandview was a small settlement on the Missouri River in present-day Kansas. It was named for General James K. Polk, who had served as the 25th President of the United States from 1849 to 1853. The town grew up around a ferry crossing over the river and became an important trading center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1904, Grandview seceded from Kansas and became an independent republic known as The Republic of Grandview. The government of The Republic operated until it fell to Mexico in 1912. Today, Grandview is a small community located about halfway between Topeka and Wichita Falls, Texas, and is part of the Wichita County municipality.
