The men returned to Illinois after fishing out some small islands off the Illinois coast and started a farm on the spot. They named their farm "Grandview" in honor of General James K. Polk, who was then president of the United States. In 1839, they built a log cabin and began farming. The following year, they added another cabin to their property and continued to grow crops and raise livestock until 1845 when they decided to move away from their farm site because of the fear of Indian attack. One reason for moving was that there were no roads or trails available to them at that time. The next few years saw many changes for Grandview as people started coming back into town as business owners and builders began constructingroads and bridges acrossIowa River (now known as I-70). By 1861, Grandview had become an important commercial center due to its location on I-70 and its access to transportation including boats up the Iowa River. A post office was established in 1865 and soon became one of the most important points of contact between residents in town and those living away from it on farms or ranches. During this time period, several churches were erected in town including First Methodist Church which was dedicated on October 3rd, 1865; Sacred Heart Catholic Church which was dedicated on November 15th; St John’s Evangelist Episcopal Church which was dedicated on December 12th; Christmastime Services at Holy Family Catholic Church were held at Presbyterian Churches until 1906 when all services were moved inside by order of Mayor Woodruff “Pete” Bowerson who desired that all religious services be conducted within one single building so that community spirit could be brought together during times Of Christmas celebrations. As businesses flourished in town during this time period, families gradually became more wedged between different social classes with majority being composed of farmers/ ranchers with children working various jobs around home while parents took care of both family members as well as paying taxes necessary for public school education notables such as Mayor Woodruff “Pete” Bowerson himself teaching 2nd grade girls howto read & write using only crude tools given to them by their mothers upon marriage & girls learn about proper hygiene practices before going into high school—-thus ensuring early onset exposure Toreading & Literacy skills
In 1870, Grandview was a small town of about 100 residents. It was located in what is now the city of Springfield. In 1871, the townsite was surveyed and platted as part of a larger land grant to James M. Brown from the Missouri Legislature. The town's name originated with its founders - John Brown and his brother James - who named it for their home state, New York. The first store in Grandview opened in 1875. A post office operated from 1876 to 1888. In 1898, the community became an agricultural center when a new flour mill was built there. The mill closed in 1906 and the town lost much of its economic activity until revived by development around the turn of the century. In 1950, Grandview had a population of about 375 people; by 2000, that number had declined to about 150 people due to population growth in Springfield and other nearby communities. However, some businesses have continued to operate in Grandview through recent years including KFC, Dunkin' Donuts, Walmart and Sears
