GrandVIEW, MISSOURI - A small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri, population 910 as of 2010. The community is named for a large family of wealthy farmers who bought the land in 1881. The original homesteaders were Methodist Episcopalians, and their church still stands on the edge of town. Grandview was founded in 1890 by prominent Masons and Odd Fellows. It became a post office in 1907 and a general store in 1914. Over time, however, the focus of Grandview changed from agriculture to local manufacturing: soapstone tiles (1929), bricks (1945), tires (1949), computers (1976), and medical equipment (1994). In 2000 Grandview became an all-girls school when it merged with nearby Grosvenor Academy. The economy of Grandview has been dominated by local industries since its founding: livestock production, tourism, manufacturing processes for furniture and textiles, and agricultural products have all been important factors in its history. Today many residents are employed within these industries; however, some older businesses have closed or moved away as new industry has emerged statewide. Some notable recent examples include Pappas Manufacturing Company which produces concrete mix for roads and bridges; United Glass Works which makes glass bottles; RKO Radio Corporation which manufactured radios until 1977; Phelps Dodge Corporation which built cars until their merger with Chrysler in 1968; US Steel Corporation which produced locomotives until 1970; Miller Brewing Company until 2006; Beaumont Plastics Company until 2011; KOCH Children’s HospitalUntil recently one of the most significant employers in Grandview was Phelps Dodge Corporation whose chemical plants were located across the street from town center before they were shut down due to environmental issues. Grandview is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Grandview was founded in 1848 by John Gentry and his wife Lucy as a log cabin community on the eastern bank of the Missouri River. The first post office opened in 1850 and Grandview became a village in 1872. In 1904, it became an incorporated town. The current name of the town comes from its location on high ground overlooking the river valley, which made it an attractive place to settle after years of being near river mouths and other points of military importance. The origin story of Grandview has been told for many years by local residents who lived there during those early days: when John Gentry discovered land that would later become Grandview he didn't know what to make of it because there were no other people around hereabouts! So he drove around looking for some appropriate spot to build his cabin - eventually finding a spot just east of where present-day Main Street meets Ulysses Road (the original course of the Missouri River). Gentry named his new community "Grand View" after himself and his wife Lucy's home country – Germany! He built their first house there in 1848 and they soon had six more children living there with them...and then some! After almost 20 years living in this new location, John Gentry passed away in 1865 at the age of 72 due to complications from tuberculosis contracted while working on a farm nearby. His wife continued to live there until her death in 1901; she was 88 years old at that time. Over time, many others moved into Grandview including General Grant's father-in-law Drury (he had married Lucy), several merchants who did business on Main Street between Whitehall and Independence Roads, as well as several families who lived near High School (now known as Our Lady Of Good Help Catholic Secondary School) until all but two were gone by 1930 when World War II started and most everyone left for safety reasons: war brought shortages across America that affected everything from food to housing; even those few who remained got ridof their businesses during wartime rationing so they could not survive without them! In 1924, George Richards organized what would be known as “the First National Bank” within our limits hereabouts – one main reason why so much later development took place right around our corner since banks weren’t available then Downtown/nearby like they are now – back then banking only happened Downtown/ inside big old brick buildings you might have seen if you patronized one such establishment!: note too how times have changed since back then downtown StL wasn’t just filled with ‘chocolate bars & pizza’ type places like it is today 🙂 Today we still enjoy good company outside during lunchtime…despite financial hardships over recent years 😉
Grandview was born in 1836 on a farm west of present-day Carthage, Missouri. The first settler in the area was John Stephenson and his family, who arrived in 1830. The town growth began slowly due to lack of transportation and access to water. In 1859, the railroad reached Grandview from St. Louis via Carthage and it quickly became a thriving community with businesses, churches, and schools. The population peaked at 1,600 in 1890 but declined shortly thereafter due to various factors such as economic recession and increased migration to larger towns. However, the town’s legacy remains strong today with several local businesses including S&H Farms (now known as Kroger), Scott Paper Co., AT&T Bell Labs., and JPL/NASA Ames Research Center..
