He named it after his uncle, Jean Baptiste de Grand Preux, marquis de la Ville-Marie. The first permanent settler in what is now Grandview was Isaac Goodyear who arrived in 1837. He founded a farm and bought title to land from early pioneer families such as Cook and Gentry. In 1871, John Stephenson founded an oil well at Wellesley Springs which led to many other businesses being established around this time including lumberyards, grain elevators and telephone companies. In 1907, Grandview became part of Platte County when it was organized from parts of neighboring Johnson County. As more people moved into town during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, downtown experienced growth including several large department stores (J F Steak House/Pizza Hut), movie theaters (Cinemark Stadium 24 & Regal 16), restaurants (Lenny's Pizza) and retail buildings like Sprague's Hardware Store which remain extant today as part of downtown business district known as Old Town Grandview. During World War II many servicemen lived or worked in town while others built homes on nearby farmland for those who could not return home due to war service or illness; some still live there todayentombed among their belongings inside city limits adjacent to old military barracks used by local police until 2003 when they were sold to developers who converted them into apartment complexes known as "The Barracks".

Grandview was founded in 1836, when the Missouri Territorial Legislature passed a bill creating a new township in Jackson County. The first settler to arrive in what is now Grandview was Nicholas Sibley, who came in 1837. At the time of its creation, Grandview had only one house and a few acres of land. The Township’s first election took place on November 3, 1836 and James A. Eagleton won the seat with over 60% of the votes. The first town meeting was held on December 12th and it elected Isaac Vail as the first Clerk at $5 per day. On January 1st, 1840, Grandview became a full-time municipality with J.S. Haggerty as its Mayor and Wm Dickey as clerk for just under two years before both men resigned to become members of the Missouri General Assembly which then created Jackson County.[1] On July 9th, 1846, elections were held for all municipal offices within Jackson County and Wm Dickey again won without opposition becoming Mayor for life with an annual salary of $2,500 however he did not serve continuously because he was term expired by November 2nd that year[2]. In 1850 Julia Meeks moved from Independence to live near her father in Grandview and started marketing vegetables there; this early growth rate led to development around shopping areas such as North Park (now known as Northridge) which opened up during the late 1800s when Grand View became more developed than ever before thanks to Julia’s initiatives[3]. In 1865 John Fenton arrived from Kentucky bringing his plowshares along with him[4]. This sparked further development including various businesses opening up around North Park like J&J Hardware where farmers could buy tools needed for their agricultural endeavors[5], Post Office (now known as Walmart) being built on Euclid Avenue soon after[6], etcetera until today’s very well-known shopping center located right off Interstate 44 close to IHOP originally called “The Grove” back when it operated out of what is now called Business District #7
