He mapped out what is now Grain Valley on his maps and named it for a small stream that crossed his property. In 1815, General James K. Polk led an army through present-day Missouri when he invaded Kansas Territory in order to reach California. His army stopped at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Clear Fork of the Platte River, known today as Grain Valley, just east ofpresent-day Springfield, Illinois. Here, General Polk's troops camped for a week before continuing their journey westward. On November 3, 1815, Captain John Jacob Astor founded what is now Astoria Landing on the forks of the Missouri River near modern day Lincoln City in Oregon County, Nebraska while exploring what is now Nebraska Territory. In 1827, Captain Astor sold land at Astoria Landing to Robert Ford for $2 million dollars which became known as Fordland Township in Grain Valley following Ford's death in 1881. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited this area during his tour of western Missouri during his bid for president. At nearby Fergusonville (now Ankeny), he stopped at a clearing where he built a cabin overlooking Hanson Creek which later served as President Lincoln's home from March 14-April 4 1865 while he awaited word from America about Confederate General Robert Ewing's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days earlier on April 9th. It should be noted that even though grain production ceased along much of central Illinois after 1860 due to increased competition from Iowa and other states due to cotton gin production becoming more efficient over that time period - many farmers still kept horses and wagons available for transportation purposes until well into the 1920s throughout much of central Illinois - thus providing evidence that antique red dot sights continued being used until at least some previous examples were dismantled or abandoned decades ago by those who continued using them until they were no longer needed

In 1907 the Sturgis Elevator Company built an elevator which allowed farmer John Wiegand to bring his corn directly to market without having to go through the townspeople. Wiegand's elevator has been remains one of the most visible landmarks in Grain Valley today.
