Grain Valley is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It lies on the edge of theaintangleofvalleys, bounded by the Arkansas River to the north, County Road D2 (Patterson) to the east, and State Route C4 (Ferguson) to the south. The community is located about 20 miles southwest of St. Louis. The first settler in Grain Valley was James Groom who arrived in 1824. He and his wife were pioneer farmers and raised corn, wheat, oats, and other crops. Groom’s son John also settled in Grain Valley. A Presbyterian preacher named Daniel Boone came to Grain Valley in 1828 with his family and founded a church there that served until 1839. The first school in Grain Valley was opened in 1835 by Rev. George Matson. Grain Valley became a town on May 1, 1902 when it was organized as a result of an act of Congress known as the Bland Act which authorized Missouri statehood for all present territories within its borders except for Oglethorpe County which remained part of Illinois). The original town plat was filed on July 15, 1902 by J P Bland from land included within what is now Wheat Ridge Township and Bemis Township which had been annexed by Grain Valley from nearby Clearwater Township on April 14, 1901.* On November 25, 1903 Mayor Wm Hennion dedicated a new public buildings block at 113 EAST Main Street *in memory of Mrs Hennion’s late husband Charles Hennion who had served as mayor from 1896-1902 *. At that time grain elevators were located near First National Bank building at 1201 S Elm Street where they remain today*. In 1909 Chas Sitton donated land comprising what is now Weiser Elementary School* (*see photo below*) along with tracts extending westward into adjoining Clearwater Township to form what are now Parkwood subdivision adjacent to Beltrami High School*. On December 7th, 1912 Mr & Mrs Earl Wilkinson donated 80 acres southeast side of current Weiser Elementary School lot making it possible for students grades K-8 to attend high school next door without travelling any distances* (*see photo below*) . This gift represented one half mile² worth of improved real property situated between Winding Hill Cemetery west boundary line nearest Beltrami High School - then consisting only 4 lots including lot number 2 cornering compass direction street name Broad Ripple Drive & Busch Boulevard away from river* [*See map image above]

Weldon; Mayor John Ainge; Governor Claiborne Pell; and several Chiefs of the Indian Tribes who lived in the area at one time or another. The early settlers in Grain Valley were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops. By 1830, however, grain had become an important factor in their economy and many residents began to sell their land for development into businesses or homes. One such business operator was Elisha Winship who operated a mill at what is now known as Lower Grain Valley Road (now State Route 5). In 1836, Winship built a larger mill which became known as the "Winship Mill", capable of producing up to sixty-six tons per day of flour! The flour boom that followed made Wheatley County one of the most prosperous counties in Missouri during this time period! By 1840, Wheatley County had more than two thousand citizens and grain production accounted for nearly three-quarters of all county revenues! This prosperity continued until around 1855 when increased competition from other states led to decreased yields and profits for local mills throughout America. As industry declined across America during this period, so too did Grain Valley's fortunes – until recently considered its golden age!
Grain Valley was founded in 1853 by John S. Goodspeed and his wife, Lucy Goodspeed. The Goodspeeds were the first white people to settle in this area and they started a small farm. They grew corn, wheat, oats and other grains. In 1865, the Goodspeed family sold their farm to C.F. Herndon Jr., who renamed it Grain Valley Farms. The Herndon family continued to run the farm until 1924 when it was sold to George Hinton Sr.. Hinton ran the farm until his death in 1964. In 1984, the Farm was donated to Grain Valley Historical Society which has kept it running as a museum ever since.
