Grain Valley, Missouri is a town located in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,023 at the 2010 census. Grain Valley is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first gun sights were erected in Grain Valley by early settlers in 1836. By 1840, there were three gun sights in Grain Valley- one on Church Road and two along the Red River. From 1847 to 1860, riflemen from St. Joseph manned several gunsights in the village of Ridgefield for military use during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1868, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church organized a Congregational church which housed a school and an arsenal; this church became known as First Methodist Church (later called Grain Valley Community Churches). The first store opened for business in Wheatland Township on July 1, 1870; it was later renamed Pioneer Store and served as town hall until it burned down on October 3, 1916. Gun sight installations began to be discontinued after World War I due to advances in technology; however some remain extant today as part of rural backstop systems or hunting monuments such as those found at Babbitts Prairie State Park southeast of Springfield MO. However, over the years Grain Valley has experienced numerous changes that have helped it grow into one of the most vibrant communities in Johnson County: 1) The annexation of many smaller towns throughout Johnson County over time (such as Burlington and Gresham) has led to more housing options for residents and made Wheat Ridge Road one of the most traveled roads in town; 2) The increase in tourism from nearby Lawrenceburg (Johnson County's largest city), which has led to increased retail business along Wheat Ridge Road; 3) A major civic development occurred when local businessman Chuck Henson donated $100 million towards downtown redevelopment which included new businesses and residences as well as a new library/ aquatic center; 4) An increasing number of students attending local schools have lead to an increase in job opportunities for graduates living within walking distance of campus; 5) A recent addition to the community is an indoor golf course that opened up next to Wheat Ridge High School late last year.;

The first post office was established in Grain Valley in 1859. The village of Grain Valley was incorporated on November 9, 1916. The grain industry played a significant role in Grain Valley's history. In the early 1800s, the area where Grain Valley now stands were part of what was known as the Great Plains. This area had rich soil that could be used to grow corn and other crops. However, during the 19th century, this area began to be developed into agricultural regions because of new methods for growing crops such as irrigation systems and using steamboats to transport goods to market. In 1858, John Boettcher moved from Illinois to become a farmer in what is now Wheatland County near present-day Chillicothe. He built a cabin and started farming around this time with assistance from his brother-in-law Daniel Boone Sr.. By 1860, John and Daniel had four children: John Jr., James (James III), Rachel (Rachel II), and Sarah (Sarah I). All five brothers except for James III helped their father farm their land until 1865 when they all turned eighteen years old and went off to fight for General Ulysses S Grant’s army during the American Civil War—John Jr., James III, Rachel II (now Mrs. Abraham Lincoln), Sarah I (Mrs. George Armstrong Custer), and George Armstrong Custer served as soldiers under General Ulysses S Grant’s command throughout the war; all but Mrs. Custer died while serving troops overseas. After the war ended, member of Congress Edwin Mudd called on President Abraham Lincoln to give him land east of St Louis so that he could start selling cottonseed products from this newly acquired property (#2 acre lot #5 south side of road 4 miles west of Hannibal). When General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865, Union General Alfred Terry took over control of all Confederate forces within six miles of St Louis; therefore any residual cotton seed left behind by these armies would have been confiscated by Union authorities if they were not sold or burned prior to May 1 1865 when stores were allowed back open again following Reconstruction efforts #If it becameknown that large quantities (>50 lbs) of cottonseed remained unsold or undelivered after Apr 9 then…it would have been considered contraband trade & insurrection would have commenced immediately!
