The club met monthly at the old Blair House on South Main Street and its purpose was to promote shooting sports at local schools. In 1903, the association merged with another group called the “Kansas City Rifle Club” to form the present-day Grain Valley Rifle & Pistol Club Incorporated. The club has always been a major force in both local community activities and statewide competitions, sponsoring many events over the years including muzzleloading exhibitions, rifle matches, pistol matches, target shooting contests, afloat games (such as croquet) and even a small game shootin’ tournament! Today, grain valley rifle & PistolClub continues to play an important role in our region by hosting many amateur tournaments throughout the year as well as providing opportunities for members to learn more about firearms from experienced shooters from around the country!

The area now known as Grain Valley was first settled by Native Americans in the 1500s. The early residents of this region were the Osage and Shawnee. In 1803, a group of United States Army officers founded Fort Henry in what is now Grain Valley. This military post served as a supply depot for western Missouri during the War of 1812. After the war, the fort was abandoned and most of its buildings were destroyed. In 1825, a group of Englishmen came to this region and organized a farming community known as “Mound City”. The English settlers built mills and erected churches in what is today Grain Valley. Over time, many other European immigrants arrived in this region, including Irish Catholics and Germans. By 1870, Grain Valley had more than 300 residents. During World War II, some of the best farmland in western Missouri was burned down to provide supplies for troops fighting in Europe. As a result, much of present-day Grain Valley was undeveloped until after World War II ended. In 1949, grain farmers began developing the land into farms that would house crops such as corn and wheat. Today, Wheat Ridge Airport is located just north of Grain Valley on Highway 66
