Grain Valley is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 886 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grain Valley was founded in 1859 by Amos and Nancy (Ferguson) Smith. The village was platted in 1859 by Amos and Nancy Ferguson, who named it after their home valley in Scotland. The first store on the site opened in 1860. By 1865, grain had become the mainstay of local economy and grain prices were set by farmers rather than merchants or government officials. In 1871, a schoolhouse and post office were built; both remain standing today. A millrace ran through the village until 1915 when it was replaced by a road. In 1912-13, during World War I, Grain Valley became an important training ground for Ulysses S Grant's army Storm Troopers unit known as "The Green Berets." After the war ended, many soldiers returned to Grain Valley to continue their education or work at nearby farms while others moved into new homes in Grain Valley or other nearby towns which had been developed after World War I. GrainValley has seen various changes over its history including annexations from other communities during prohibition years (1908-1914), increased population growth due to agricultural expansion within Clay County as well as outlying counties during hard times following World War II (1945-1950), suburban development beginning to take hold in the late 1960s/early 1970s culminating with incorporation of neighboring towns into GrainValley via annexation and consolidation efforts; most recent changes have been attributable to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina which caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure within Grapevine Township leading some residents to move away from their homes while others surrendered their land titles allegiances effective January 1st 2006

Grain Valley is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Grain Valley was founded by John and Sarah Morehead in 1853. The Moreheads were pioneers who came to the area from Tennessee and started an agricultural business. In 1868, they sold their business to C. H. Grimes and his family. The Grimes family ran the business for many years until it was taken over by Harry Sweeny in 1957. Sweeny added a grocery store, a post office, and two churches to the village that year. Grain Valley stagnated during the 1960s and 1970s due to economic stagnation throughout much of Missouri; however, since the late 1990s there have been several revitalization efforts led by local businesses including restaurants, art galleries, sporting events, and hotel development. The first settlers in Grain Valley were John Morehead (1813-1892) and his wife Sarah (1787-1872). They arrived from Tennessee in 1853 with their three children John Jr., James Jr., and LucyMorehead: all of whom became farmers in their own right after leaving home. Their first crop was corn which they grew on their farmstead near present-day Grain Valley Elementary School until about 1870 when they bought some land outside of town for expansion purposes; this land later became known as morehall Farmstead Park after them both died in 1918 aged 83 years each*fn1 . By 1865*, grain crops had become such an important part of the village's economy that a mill had been built nearby; however*, this mill never produced any finished product because it could not cope with increasing demand from other villagers for flour etc.*fn2 . From 1865 through 1890*, original owner Grimes & Son operated one machine shop out of town *fn3 *. After acquiring additional property within town limits in 1895 [*fn4 ], grimes & sons remodeled/renovated their old mill into what is now known asgrain valley flour distillery (now called grainscience), becoming one of starch production's earliest success stories*. That same year also saw Grimes retire from active participation with company *fn5 *. He bequeathed his entire business interest - including mills , warehouse buildings , equipment etc.*fn6 - to his son Harry Jr.; grimes & son then continued running the distillery until its closure circa 1938*. In 1951*, Harry Sr.'s grandson Harry Jr.(1910-) purchasedgrimes &son Distillers Ltd., merging it intoHarry Sweeny Co., Lp.. At its inceptionHarrison Sr.'s company exported 45% of all whiskey produced in America * fn7 *. By 1978 Harrison's company had increased exports to 100%, making him America's second largest whiskey producer behind only Anheuser Busch Brewery Incorporated (* fn8 ). During World War II Harrison served as chairman of Truman National Security Council under President Franklin D Roosevelt * fn9 ]. Since retiring he has spent most of his time philanthropically helping various community organizations across America*fn10 .
