Gladstone is a small town in the Shawnee Hills region of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is located on the banks of the Shawnee River. It is part of the Springfield-St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Gladstone were French colonists who arrived in 1763 and established a trading post near present-day Gladstone. They named their settlement after Prime Minister William Pitt, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, because he had recently visited this area while campaigning for reelection as British Prime Minister in 1802. When Missouri became a state in 1819, it included parts of what are now Gladstone and Westland counties. The town's charter was granted on March 9, 1825 by Governor James K. Polk under the name "Pittsburg." At that time, there were only six residents living in Gladstone: four farmers and two boatmen working for a local mill; one blacksmith; and one shoemaker or tailor. In 1830, when Missouri became an American slave state (to which Kansas also belonged), Gladstonians added slavery to their mix by voting to ratify the Constitution of America without having it read aloud from the constitution's text. This action outraged many free men throughout Illinois and other states that had ratified it earlier that year – including St.. Louis – where slavery was already legal! In response to this protest vote, Arkansas Territory organized a meeting on October 8th at Forrest Hall to consider whether or not to secede from Missouri due to these changes in our state government. Ultimately however, only two members attended this meeting (one being John Cramer) so no decision was made about secession…although some early efforts were made towards joining Texas during this time period as well!
