Gladstone, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Springfield-Carroll City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1839 by John Waddell and others from Illinois as a trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. It became an agricultural center after Colonel James K. Polk discovered oil shale there in 1859. In 1900, Gladstone had a population of 350; by 1940 it had shrunk to 100 due to World War II bombing and other factors. During the 1960s and 1970s, Gladstone experienced growth as an industrial center thanks to its location near Interstate 44 and Kansas Highway 66. The industry closed in the early 2000s but has since been resurrected with some new businesses opening up over the past decade or so. Some of the newer businesses include: a mobile billboard company that rents out billboards throughout town; a clothing store that opened up in 2013; and a bar called "The Shakespeare Tavern" which opened up in 2017. Gladstone is home to one high school, Pleasant Hill Consolidated High School (opened 1957), two churches (Clergy Village Baptist Church (founded 1906) and First Baptist Church (established 1909)), five schools (grades 7-12 Howell Jr./Snyder Elementary School (1901), Gladstone Intermediate School No 2 (opened 1954), Willow Creek Intermediate School No 3 (opened 1974), Gladstone Senior High School No 1(opened 2001))and two parks - Pleasant Hill Park & American Legion Field - which are also home to baseball diamonds for boys and girls teams, soccer fields, basketball courts, handball courts and badminton Courts/Basketball Courts Doubles & Singles Tournament).
