Scope mounts are a common sight in Gladstone, Missouri. For over 125 years, the Mounted Police Department has used scope mounts to provide easy access to their rifles. Scope mounts were first developed by Captain George Barker of the Mounted Police department in 1875. Barker designed and built his own mount using a Howe screw and leather strap system. The Mounted Police Department continued to use these mounts until the late 1800s when they switched to metal scopes with wooden rings. The first metalScope mount was created by Captain John Sowder of the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department in 1903. This mount used a small iron ball and socket joint to secure the rifle to the mounting platform. The next year, Captain Harry Ladd invented the Laddscope which featured a large steel ball and socket joint that allowed for long range shooting without having to adjust the rifle's mounting position each time you fired it. In 1916, Captain Frank Wills developed the Willsscope which utilized an innovative tilting plate system that allowed users to view all aspects of their target from any desired location on their rifle barrel. Throughout its history, Scope Mounting has been an important part of Gladstone's Rifle History Museum! Gladstone, Missouri is an unincorporated community in Boone County, Missouri, United States. Gladstone is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River at its confluence with the Missouri River. Gladstone was laid out in 1858 by George Washington Parish and named for British Prime Minister John Gladstone.

Here is a brief overview of some common scope mounts: The first scope mount was designed by Eugene Stoner in 1907. It consisted of two parts: the baseplate and the objective lens. The objective lens was inserted into the baseplate and then screwed onto it. This system allowed for rifles to be mounted with both windage and elevation adjustments, which was important at the time because accurate shooting required perfect alignment between the bore and object. A second type of scope mount appeared in 1944, called an open-type mounting system. This system featured two holes drilled into either side of the barrel, through which screws were threaded to hold onto an accessory such as a bipod or tripod. These mounts were popular because they allowed users to adjust windage and elevation without having to remove their rifle from service; however, they were not very sturdy and could easily fail if used incorrectly. In 1951, Weaver developed a new type of telescope mount called a Weaver Baron that became popular because it allowed users to adjust windage (and hence magnification) while their rifle remained stationary. Gladstone was founded in 1819 by James K. Gladstone, a landowner and politician from Missouri. The town grew rapidly due to the agricultural potential of its location, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 residents. In 1836, Gladstone became the capital of the new Confederate States of America, and during that year it also came into being as the first city in Missouri. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century, reaching a peak in population at 1,500 residents in 1890. However, by 1910 Gladstone had decreased to around 350 residents and began to decline thereafter. It officially ceased operations as an incorporated municipality in 1950. Today, only a few scattered remnants of Gladstone remain – most notably its original courthouse which is now used as a museum).
19th century: In 1831, General James K. Polk was elected the 34th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold that office. On November 3, 1841, Missouri passed a bill creating a territorial government for Kansas and Nebraska without Native American consent. The territory was named for John Gladstone, an English statesman who had played a significant role in suppressing slavery in his homeland. The territory was divided into two parts on January 1, 1863: Kansas became part of the Union while Nebraska stayed under Indian control. 20th century: The Great Depression took its toll on Missouri during the 1930s; however, it fared better than most other Midwestern states during World War II because of its strategic location as a key transportation hub between North America and Europe. In 1949, Missouri became one of only five U.S. states to allow voting by citizens regardless of race or color. That same year saw passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination in public life based on race or gender at all levels in Missouri and throughout the United States.
