Became an entrepreneur early on in his life and started several businesses including cattle ranching and wheat farming before becoming an farmer himself with his own farmsteads and land holdings around Newton County for many years until he passed away at age ninety-six on October 12th, 1916

Today it is a small farming community with a few retail outlets along Main Street although most people still rely heavily on agriculture as their livelihoods
The first white settler in Gladstone, Missouri was Jacob Hecker in 1837. A store and post office were established here in 1838. The town was named for the then-new U.S. Senator, John C. Frémont (1803-1868). Gladstone was platted on Aug. 3, 1841, by J.N. Goodnight and Wm.Fenton with a population of 10 residents. The town had a school from 1845-1851, a grist mill from 1850-1855, and a freight depot from 1865-1867 before becoming an agricultural center with dairy production predominant until the early 20th century when heavy manufacturing took over.
