Gladstone is a small town in Logan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Gladstone is located on the edge of the Ozark Mountains and on the border of Butler County and Clay County. The first people to live in Gladstone were French traders who came there in 1805 as part of a fur trading expedition led by Jean Baptiste Chouteau. They named their new settlement after Lord Melbourne, British Prime Minister from 1806 to 1828. After the American Revolutionary War ended, settlers from Kentucky started arriving in what is now Gladstone and surrounding areas. In 1797, Englishman John Heckewelder built a cabin here along with other pioneer families. By 1800, most of present day Logan County had been settled and most of today's Gladstone was developed as a result of this early development. In 1819, General James Wilkinson fought his Battle of Wilson's Creek against Native Americans near here; it marked the end of his campaign that culminated in his victory over Robert Estrada at Horseshoe Bend. As a result, many pioneers moved westward into what is now Butler and Clay Counties to join Wilkinson's army or else follow him westward into Indian Territory during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Most residents arrived during this time period via wagon train or stagecoach ride across country. In 1850s, farmers began growing corn and wheat while also raising livestock and developing logging camps for lumbering purposes nearby; these activities promoted growth within Gladestone throughout much of this century until more recent times when tourism has become an important factor in its economy In 1905 local resident Augustus Crain organized an agricultural fair which became known as "Crain's Agricultural Fair". This event served as an annual fundraiser for school funding for many years until it was discontinued in 1978 due to budget cuts by then-Logan County Board Chairman Donny Weiler because he felt that agricultural exhibits at county fairs were not contributing enough towards county coffers Gladstone experienced significant growth following World War II thanks largely to its location within easy reachof munitions plants operated by Midwestern munitions companies like Dow Chemical Company (now DuPont) and Westinghouse Electric Company (nowNBCUniversal). These businesses created jobs both domestically and abroad through manufacturing explosives, munitions components, radar antennas etc., which helped contribute to local economic sustainability up until recently .
