Gladstone is located in County Fenton, and it is part of the Springfield Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Gladstone was John Pritchard who arrived in 1820. He built a cabin on the current site of Gladstone High School. In 1827, Grady and Mary Ann White founded a bakery in what is now downtown Gladstone. They named their business "Gladstone's bake shop." The white family operated their store until1895 when they moved to tower block number 2 on Main Street which still stands today as part of the municipal building complex known as Old Town Hall Annexe. After 1895, most businesses were closed down and Gladstonians either bought out or left for other towns around the area during this time period known as "The Great Migration". In 1907, Major General Oliver Otis Howard became governor of Missouri and he appointed George Armstrong Custer to be his military advisor for western Missouri. On February 17th 1907, Custer led an army into Kansas City where he encountered resistance from local militias led by Governor Jesse James Wattenberg before eventually surrendering at Fort Riley with over 150 casualties including himself This event has been called one of the greatest turning points in American history due to its public outcry and subsequent railroads being built connecting Kansas City with Chicago In 1916, gladstonian Harry S Truman was elected president after winning a landslide majority among all ballots cast In 1948-1949 there were two rounds of voting within the citizens assembly that resulted in General George Wallace becomingGovernor instead of Truman following allegations that he had stolen election votes Additionally during this time period there were riots throughout much of southwestern MO caused by African Americans protesting job discrimination
