Gladstone is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Gladstone was founded in 1836 by James C. Gladstone and his wife Anna. It is named after Benjamin Franklin's home state of Virginia. Gladstone is located on Missouri Route K north of the city of Springfield. The first settlers in what would become Gladstone were James C. and Anna Gladstone, who came to the area in 1836 from Virginia with their three children. They built a log cabin on a corner lot near present-day Old Hickory Road and West Church Avenue. James C.'s brother John joined him soon after and they started trading goods with other settlers before starting a farmstead themselves in 1840 that included 125 acres (50 ha). In 1845, they moved to their current location on Illinois Street between State Route 72 and US Highway 606 within sight of downtown Springfield. In 1849, Anna died suddenly while pregnant with their third child; James took care of his two young children until 1850 when he married Sarah Jane Whitehead (1819–90), daughter of William Whitehead of Columbia City, Missouri (an early settler in that region). The couple had six children: Samuel (1851–1948), George Washington (1853–1941), Anna Katherine (1855–1945), Alfred Everett Whitehead (1858–1964), and Franklin Pierce Whitehead (1861–1945). In 1870, James C., Sarah Jane's father-in-law, died at age 83; herwidowed mother continued to live there until her death in 1890 also at age 83 years old. The white settlement around which Gladston clustered gradually began to lose population throughout the mid 19th century as black families moved into nearby Springfield or larger cities such as Kansas City or St Louis for work opportunities or education during the Great Migration from southern states during the time period.
