Gun targets have been a part of Gladstone, Missouri since the 1800s. The first target to be established in the city was a blacksmith’s shop on Main Street. For many years, this was the only target available in town. The first gun club in Gladstone was formed in 1853 and met at the home of Mr. John Witherspoon. This club had a smallgun range and shooting gallery within its walls. In 1871, the citizens of Gladstone passed an ordinance to prohibit handguns within city limits. This ordinance led to the establishment of a rifle range and pistol range on State Street by A. J. Smith & Sons Gun Range Architects Incorporated. At this time, Gladstone became America’s “ Shot Gallery Capital of the World” for its numerous rifle ranges and pistols programs offered throughout the duration of prohibition from 1920- 1933 inclusive (Gladstone Targets Website). Gladstone is a small town with a small downtown core and many smaller businesses scattered throughout the city. It has a rich history that goes back to 1854 when it was founded as a settlement by Mormons on the banks of the Arkansas River. Gladstone has been changing hands ever since and now hosts an eclectic mix of people from all over Missouri and Illinois. However, crossbows were very effective at preventing military forces from harassing their enemies and driving them back. Gun targets became more popular after the invention of handguns in the 15th century. Handguns were much easier to shoot than bows and arrows, and they could be fired more rapidly than older weapons. This made them ideal for using in close-quarters combat, where speed was important to success. Despite their popularity,gun targets remained unsuccessful until the early 19th century. Gladstone, Missouri is a small town located in Harrison County, Missouri. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gladstone was founded in 1854 by Scotsman Alexander McLaughlin and his wife, Nannie. It is named for Scottish Prime Minister Sir John Gladstone. The first settler in Gladstone was James Forbes, who arrived in 1855. He and his family became the most prominent landowners in the community until their death in 1865. next to them were John Pritchard and his brother-in-law Archibald Weir; they also served as postmasters from 1861 to 1865. In 1868, George Witherspoon built a sawmill on the river near present day Big Creek Road and Thomas Kidd purchased land east of town on what is now State Route 521 (now US 64). Kidd's mill manufactured lumber for furniture stores throughout Harrison County before it ceased operations in 1916. In 1870, John Cramer bought a piece of land north of town from Andreas Müller and began growing corn there until he sold it to Hannibal Kelley in 1902. Gladstone prospered during World War I because its strategic location on both sides of the Little Missouri River made it an important staging area for military supplies entering and leaving Confederate territory; during that time, local businesses such as grocery stores, grain elevators and schools flourished despite low taxes due to wartime rationing regulations enacted by President Abraham Lincoln. However, following the war's end in 1918, economic conditions deteriorated rapidly with little new development taking place until well after World War II ended without any significant impact on local economy or demographics irrigation projects begun during that time resulted largely negative environmental impacts includinglistening ponds formed when water diverted from Main Street flowed into beaver dams along Big Creek Road today improving visibility at night but eroding away much surrounding countryside over time making access difficult if not impossible; after many years of protesting against these projects by local citizens culminating with several sit-ins organized by community groups finally successful closure of one project resulting in state government intervention which led ultimately to agreement between developers and farmers restoring original soil depth while still allowing viewable wetlands
