Gladstone is a small town in the Ozarks of eastern Missouri. It was named for the British Prime Minister, Sir John Gladstone, who served as U.S. Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1855 to 1858 and 1860-1865. Gladstone is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Poplar Bluff and 36 miles (57 kilometers) north of Springfield. The population as of 2010 was 1,853. The first mention of Gladstone comes from French traders in 1712 when they noted an Indian village near present-day Gladstone on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1800, General James K. Polk mentions "Gladstones" in his memoirs when he refers to British posts west of the river at this time: "In my last campaign I had skirmishes with several Mobile parties under Commodore [John] Floyd...Some GadsdenIndians were killed by us at what is now called 'Gladstones.' There are three or four settlements hereabouts--all but one destroyed by fire some years ago." On July 2, 1828, Missouri Territorial Governor James Clark reported that he had received intelligence that a group composed mostly of Arkansas Cowboys were planning to migrate south and established themselves in what would become Gladstone Township on October 15th; Clarks forces arrived two days later to apprehend them and return them back to Arkansas Territory where their leaders planned to establish a new capital city there instead. On September 10th 1830, David Dickey patented land extending northeast from present-day Gladstone along both banks of the river for $1 per acre (0.50 acres = 100 kg). This allowed for development and growth along what would come to be known as Dickey's Strip which ran through much today's Gladstone Township before turning northwest towards Highway 70 just beyondpresent day Knobledone Avenue which leads into Springfield proper via US Route 169/Route 66/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today known as I-70/I-6 exit 14A off highway I-6 just past store fronts currently used for apartments/residential buildings near future business park boundaries
