It was named for Sir John Polkinghorne, 6th Viscount Palmerston who had come to America in 1786 and become convinced that the new country could be spared from French occupation by driving them from their land. In 1823, the first store opened in what is now Gladstone when James Polk became President of the United States. In 1830-31, an arsenal and wagon works were built on Main Street; these buildings still stand today and are used as a library annexe. A post office was established at Polk's Landing on December 15, 1825; it served until February 8, 1870 when Buchanan County formed its own Post Office Department which remained in operation until November 30 1922 when it merged with the renamed Kansas City Federal RepublicPost Office Department within the bureau of postal service under then Director Franklin D Roosevelt. The town developed around a Lutheran church (the first permanent structure erected in Gladstone) which still stands today - Stauffer's German Evangelical Lutheran Church - and two stores: Gadsden & Sons Store on Main Street and Jepson Bros., later known as Simpson Brothers Hardware Store (now Seaweed). These stores were among the most important physical landmarks of early Gladstone because they sold goods directly to residents rather than through mail order or other channels Gladstone experienced significant growth after World War II due to the increase in military installations throughout Missouri including those at Fort Riley (later Joint Base Andrews), Little Rock Air Force Base, Ozark Army Depot and Warrensburg Army Depot all located within walking distance of town limits . As these installations increased demand for housing and retail space within town boundaries some residents began moving out while others decided to stay during this time period referred to as The Golden Age of Gladstone Development .
