It was laid out in 1871 and platted in 1872. The community became a village in 1908. Gladstone is located at (36.695683, -91.977953). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,052 people residing in the village. The racial makeup of the village was 97% White and 3% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1% of the population. As of the census of 2008, there were 1,098 people residing in Gladstone Village including 519 households and 183 families residing within 5 blocks (or 12 villages)of one another on two different streets with no intervening individual residences- this gave rise to what's now known as "Village Blockade". This led to much tension between various groups that live close by each other over access to essential services such as water and trash pickup; however this issue has since been resolved through an agreement among Village leaders that all residents must move away from their homes if they wish to receive these services
