Gladstone, Missouri is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is one of the few remaining towns in that city's former core which remains largely rural. Gladstone was founded by John Gladstone in 1836 as a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first school in Gladstone was built in 1837; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and became a school building known as the Mechanics Institute until 1904 when it became an Episcopal church known as Trinity Anglican Church. In 1888, John Gladstone's grandson, Arthur J. Gladstone donated land to build what would become Gladston High School; it opened its doors to students on October 1, 1892. The post office at Gladstone has been open since 1850 and been called "Gladston". One of the first stores in town was called "Pine Gap" which opened in 1859 and closed in 1901 because of competition from a store opening by Wm Hargrave near present day Interstate 70 north of town. After Hargrave's store closed, local citizens started calling their new store "Gladston" after Mr. Hargrave's old name for his business place,-thus giving rise to what is still today one of the most popular names for this community - Gadsden Street! In 1903-1904, two brothers named Harry Liddle erected a frame courthouse located on Main Street between Center and Elm Streets (now Washington Avenue). This courthouse served as legal headquarters for much of northwest Missouri during World War I due to its convenient location close to military bases around Fort Defiance and Grand Forks. It also housed court records for many years after that before being moved to Topeka where it currently stands under new ownership as part of Topeka Regional History Museum The cornerstone for this courthouse was laid on February 2nd 1904 by Judge E C Whitehead with help from Mayor A C Applegate along with other leaders from across Northwest Missouri including Governor James K Moberly who traveled down from Springfield to witness the event . On July 9th 1906 Eastern Time (UTC+4) George Fenton set off an exploding clock at nearby Pawnee National Laboratory resultingin severe damage done to building & equipment-the lab had just been completed & wasn't operational yet! All buildings inside were destroyed excepting Courthouse Annex which stood vacant until 1971 when it also caught fire& partially collapsed)
