Gladstone is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,211 at the 2010 census. Gladstone's name comes from General William Tecumseh Sherman and his march through Missouri in 1864 to capture the city of Kansas City. The first settlers in Gladstone were farmers who came from Illinois in the early 1800s. By 1830, they had built a cabin on the bluffs overlooking the river below. They became known as "The Hardship Settlement." In 1831, they organized as a town and named it after Sir John Gladstone, 4th Baronet (1802-1868), an English statesman who represented British Columbia in Parliament between 1827 and 1830. Gladstone experienced some growth during its early years but declined during the 1840s when gold discoveries began to be made throughout central America. When war broke out with Mexico in 1846, though, business picked up for local merchants who supplied munitions and food to troops fighting on both sides. By 1850, Gladstone's population reached 2,000 people and by 1860 it had grown to 5,000 residents that included 300 slaves working on plantations near present-day Gladstone Village. As slavery gradually ended throughout America due to legal changes following the Civil War, many freedmen decided to settle down in central Missouri where there were few opportunities for them because of land ownership patterns then similar to those today. Some Congregationalists also bought farms around Gladstone which helped stimulate economic development there over time even furthering racial integration within society here while maintaining racial distinctions elsewhere away from this smalloted community until well into World War II when these same measures reversed themselves RL: White Southerners moving north while Black Northerners moved south). A post office was established at what is now Grady High School in 1865; since that time mail has been delivered all day long by wagonloads through Union Pacific Railroad tracks running parallel to US 231 just east of present-day Grady Elementary School!
