In 1903, another key event happened in Gladstone when Colt introduced their Model 1911 Pistol. This pistol quickly became popular among law enforcement officers and civilians alike due to its reliable function and low manufacturing costs. The railroad stimulated growth in the town and helped make it a local center for commerce. In 1886, the Griggs Manufacturing Company became one of the first companies to establish itself in Gladstone when its president, Dr. James Griggs, moved from Cincinnati to start a manufacturing company here. The Griggs Manufacturing Company manufactured farm implements, hardware and textile products until it merged with other companies in 1932 to form United States Steel Corporation. Gladstone is home to two universities: Northern Illinois University-DeKalb (NINU) and Missouri State University-Springfield (MSU). As of fall 2017, NINU had an enrollment of over 40,000 students while MSU had an enrollment of over 25,000 students
