In 1868, Fenton donated land to establish Gladstone College, which became one of the largest institutions of higher learning in central Missouri. A second college, Gladstone University, was established in 1923 and remains one of the most selective universities in central Missouri. The local economy has been based largely on agriculture since before World War II; however, recent years have seen growth in manufacturing and service sectors such as tourism and retail trade. Gladstone has a diverse cultural heritage that includes significant contributions from African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans (Ozark), Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints), Jews (Hillcrest Temple), Presbyterians (Presbyterian Church USA), Evangelicals/fundamentalists (Jesus Christ Superstar Foundation/501(c)(3)), as well as Lutherans (Lutheran Church America). Gladstone, Missouri is a small town in Harrison County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,316 at the 2010 census. Gladstone was founded in 1851. It has remained an agricultural community through much of its history. Gladstone was named for the British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour who visited the town during his presidency in 1903. Gladstone first grew as a rural post office and store on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first postmaster was Wm. Hagedorn. In 1875, two brothers built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the river and began to trade goods with settlers along the Missouri River valley. In 1881, James Buchanan Lamar became governor of Harrison County and selected Gladstone as his official residuary estate on which to build his home and relocate his family from Washington D.C.. The original building now stands as part of Gladston High School. Governor Lamar made additions to the house over time including an underground garage and swimming pool that still remain today within what is now known as Mrs. Lamar's House Annexe (now used by students for school purposes). In 1907, Landon Clements ran for president on the Prohibition ticket and won with 82% of the vote in Harrison County despite being outspent by incumbent Woodrow Wilson by more than $1 million dollars (adjusted for inflation). As part ofhis campaign platform, Clements promised to bring back Gladstone's milk production to levels achieved before prohibition took effect in 1919–1920; this promise led to increased milk production throughout Harrison County until it reverted entirely after repeal in 1933.)
