Fulton, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from John Fulton, an early settler who established a ferry service across the River Triton. In 1836, the town became a part of St. Louis County and was incorporated as a city on October 5, 1868. On January 1, 1907, it merged with nearby Jefferson City to form the new city of Jefferson City-Fulton. The first Post Office in Fulton was built in 1849 by Amos Newmark and named for General James K. Polk Sr., who had been president when Fulton became part of St. Louis County. The post office moved to its present location in 1875 and remained open until it closed on September 15th, 1966 due to lack of customers or mail volume. In 1870, Eliza Mason founded the first hospital in what is now Fulton and she is considered one of the first women physicians in America. She also founded both Women’s Savings Bank and Woman’s Building and Loan Association which are still extant today as well as other businesses including Standard Oil Company (now ExxonMobil) and JBS Eats Incorporated.. In 1902 Fulton acquired all of east side of High Street from Ottawa Road Residents were able to purchase this land after votes were taken by residents during a special election held to determine if they wanted annexation into StLouis County or not; however no annexation took place because it would have added another 400 acres (160 hectares) onto already large city limits! The days before air travel were very different than they are today; when people traveled by boat they would transport their goods upriver along the Triton River until they reached their destination which was then walked or ridden horseback overland
