In 1865, when Missouri became a state, Fulton became one of its first municipalities. The city's current name came about due to its location on what had been called "Fulton Landing", opposite the then-new fortuitous site for settlement of that name on the west bank of the river where later Independence Hall would be built (the land now known as Union Station). The earliest evidence for human habitation in this area comes from two stone tools found at what is now Fulton Ferry Road and dating back to approximately 9500 BC. These tools were used to cut wood and other materials from tree trunks and other resources which were brought downriver by water traffic or pulled overland by horse and/or animal teams. By 4000 BC there are hearths found throughout much of present day St. Louis County; this is particularly evident near downtown Saint Charles City on Rock Creek Parkway where fireplaces have been dated back to 9000 BC! In 1800, Nicholas Fulton homesteaded 160 acres (6 hectares) along Easton Road northwest of today's downtown core; he leased it from John Lewis & Son furriers who resided just upstream along Easton Creek in what is now north central Saint Charles City . This land had been used by Native Americans for hunting grounds as early as 1768 ! A few years later Nicholas' son John married Sarah Lyon who also owned some adjacent land which became known as Lyons Bottom or simply "Fulton". Underlying erosion has destroyed most evidence testifying to early resident occupancy but numerous artifacts including pottery sherds, arrowheads, spear points and flintknappers remain visible within view of modern day home values within walking distance Of many businesses located within easy access including schools (including one recently renovated with locally made bricks!) One such artifact still extant within sight today of many residents--a Mississippian point placed into service during an agricultural mission circa 1700 AD--is said to be ""The famous Cannonball"" which was donated by local businessperson Wirt Hinton 3 years ago after being lost inside an old quarry nearby! The cannonball may have once belonged to French colonists who landed hereabouts c 1500AD but it has never been positively identified! State archaeologists are currently performing archaeological excavation adjacent thereto Area will likely contain additional grave goods dating back even further into our past...A unique opportunity exists for substantial research regarding religious practices amongMissourians during this time period!" As mentioned earlier some 12 miles away another significant discovery has just occurred that provides important insights into pre-historic life herewithin our borders...A prehistoric village consisting almost entirelyof moccasin type warehas recentlybeen discovered at Ricefield.." The establishment of a ferry crossing over Millstream providing transportation between eastbound and westbound destinations served primarily farmers living inland while traders traveled between Saint Charles City on the south side and Independence Hall acrossriver on the north side; this system began operation circa 1815! However, during World War II much of what remained of Fulton was destroyed by bombing raids from Allied forces. In recent decades however, thanks to efforts by civic groups and local governments alike, muchoftheoriginal fabric of Fulton has been restored and returned to its former self again. Fulton is a city in Fulton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Fulton was George Burgess in 1818. He and his family platted the town of Fulton on land that he purchased from the state of Illinois. The original name for the town was "Fulton" but it was changed to "Fulton Heights" in honor of General James Wilkinson who commanded American forces during the Mexican War and also built a military road through this area. In 1836, Colonel Elijah Parish moved his family to what is now Fulton and they founded what is now known as Parish's Mills which became one of the most important cotton plantations in America. In 1839, news reached New Orleans that General Santa Anna had taken control of Mexico and ordered all Americans to leave Mexico with their families or be captured and executed. Many people decided to fleeMexico into Texas where there were no hostilities going on at that time. A group of about 30 men set out from Houston on horseback called the Texan Volunteers under Captain John Boggs and made their way south via Arkansas until they reached California by early 1840. Colonel Parish organized an army including artillery pieces, mules and carts to fight against Santa Anna's forces but it was too late; Santa Anna had already fled into exile before he could be stopped.
