During World War II, Fulton served as an airfield for the military Air Forces based at nearby Chalmette Army Air Field. In 1946, when St Louis became an independent city, it merged with Fulton to form one municipality which continues today as a separate entity from St Louis County under state law known as "The City of Ferguson." In 1968, due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Richard Molloy (D), much of what remains of downtown Fulton was destroyed by fire; all that stands today are some brick walls surrounding what once were storefronts and streetscape features dating back to 1835-1836
