Fulton, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The community was founded on the bottom of a small hill by farmers in 1854 as "Fulton" after James Fulton, an early settler. The name may be derived from French for "a small stream". In 1865, an act of Congress designated Fulton a town and it became one of the largest towns in St. Francois County with a population of 2,500 in 1870. The first post office was established in 1857 and operated until 1861; it was then moved to nearby Great Bend and renamed there. In 1872, General George Sibley donated land to build what is now the current courthouse complex on former Indian Territory land west of town limits; this gift made Fulton one of only two towns in Missouri to have its own courthouse building between Springfield and Columbia (the other being Carthage). In 1886, when water seeps began flowing through nearby Leadville Canyon under conditions that could not be tolerated by local farmers because they were using primitive irrigation systems which drained into Leadville Creek instead of providing fresh water for crops like wheat and corn necessary for continued growth, four men pooled their resources to buy 3 acres (1 km²) upstream from present-day Fultontown at what is now called Bluestone Beach Park and began construction on what would become the world's first major gravity well irrigation system - also known as "the Blue Water Canal". This innovative new technology allowed farmers to continue growing crops while utilizing less water than ever before while still getting good value for their money – making Fulton one of America's most prosperous towns during this period. Since becoming an incorporated town in 1922 following incorporation by vote of its residents rather than adopt legislation through legislative process as had been done earlier with many other communities within St. Francois County due to lack thereof or political infighting among those who controlled local government at that time - Fulton has played an active role within both municipal government as well as national civic organizations such as The American Legion (established here), United Way (founded here), Boys Scouts/ Girl Guides (founded here), Kiwanis Club (established here), Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house and several businesses including banks (First National Bank & Trust Company built 1902) and paper mills which have all since closed down but are preserved as cultural artifacts along Bluestone Beach Park today. Fulton is a town in Fulton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,926 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1835 by George Washington Cobb and his wife Sarah. The name comes from the French words "fuite" (flight) and "tonneau" (a large barrel). Fulton first experienced growth as a slave port on the Mississippi River. Over time, it became an agricultural community with other cotton-producing counties to the east. In 1871, Fulton developed into a city with its own government and fire department. In 1907, it annexed neighboring towns of Kilbourne and White Sulphur Springs to form a new City of Fulton. That year also marked the beginning of suburban development around the city limits; today most of Fulton is contained within its original downtown area which is still home to many businesses and residences dating back to early nineteenth century times. In 1840, George Washington Cobb established what is now known as Cobb's Mills in present day Fulton after purchasing 640 acres near present-day Carbondale for $6 per acre ($40 per km²). The milling operation thrived until 1851 when a severe storm destroyed many buildings and forced Cobb to sell his interest in the mill to James Waddell for $10 per acre ($160 per km²). Waddell operated the mill until 1862 when he sold it again to Jno Denton for $8 per acre ($240 per km²). Denton continued operations until 1865 when he burned down part of his facility during an industrial accident; this event marks the first recorded instance of an electrical fire in Fulton County. A post office called Manchester had been established in 1836 by Colonel John Cushing with help from Governor Fenton but discontinued service in 1840 because no mail reachedford from thereon. A postmaster named Manning was appointed on November 10, 1840; however, due to continuous flooding in that year's river system, Manning never received mail and his tenure expired on December 12th The first store opened at what is now known as First National Bank building on Main Street between Academy Road and Eighth Street on October 21st,. This store served as both a mercantile center for local farmers as well as providing banking services for residents throughout much of their early history

In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Kansas City was annexed by Missouri; as a result, Fulton ceased to exist as an independent city and became part of the larger municipality.
