Fulton, Missouri is a town in Fulton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Carmichael Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Fulton is a small town in the St. Louis metropolitan area, located on the east side of the city. The population was 24,939 at the 2000 census. Fulton is part of the St. Louis–Springfield–Jefferson County, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fulton was named for James Fulton, an early settler in this area. The first post office in Fulton was established on April 25, 1824. A store and school were built here in 1835 by John Witherspoon and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Beecher. Beecher donated land to build a public square on which the present courthouse stands today. In 1846, three men - Elijah Purdy, James Hickey and Michael McCarthy - founded what would become known as "The Three Musketeers". They operated a grocery store and tavern until their deaths in 1865 and 1865 respectively. In 1861, when Missouri became a Confederate state during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest called upon local farmers to contribute slaves to help carry out his army's raid into nearby Union territory; these men volunteered to work as "a brigade of negroes under Forrest" at $5 per day plus food and shelter (the price increased with each slave added). Fulton residents had mixed reactions to this offer; some felt that it was unfair that only white people could be taken advantage of while others hesitated because they didn't have enough money or manpower available to take on such an endeavor themselves. However, after several months of active recruitment efforts led by Mrs. Anna Jonsson (née Smith), many blacksmiths from neighboring towns joined forces with Fulton resident Johnnie Shields for what became known as The Battle of Fulton Arsenal; this event helped rally support for Confederate efforts in the region during the war years (see also: Battle of Corinth). After secessionist forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, allUnion soldiers were mustered out from Missouri including those from Fulton; however, most citizens remain unaware of this fact until recently when research has been conducted into various aspects concerning Reconstruction in Missouri following Civil War ended (see: History of Ferguson)). This transition period saw a number of changes take place within Fulton as well: African Americans began working alongside whites throughout much of its economy beginning with carpentry then gradually moving up through other trades over time while blacks continued to occupy many traditional white jobs such as farm labor or domestic service.. When new voting districts were created following Reconstruction based on race rather than congressional district boundaries which favored white Democrats over black Republicans across much Of Mississippi Valley etc., mostly rural areas along river valleys westward into Illinois etc., most Fusionnts living east/ northeast otStL went untouched...until now!...good thing our central business district is growing like crazy!

Fulton was founded in 1836 by Simon Fulton and his family. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who was then the United States president. It grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Missouri River and its position as a key transportation hub. In 1842, it became the capital of the new Confederate States of America and remained so until 1865. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, thanks in part to heavy industry and trade that developed around it. Railroads helped Fulton become one of the most important cities in Missouri; during this time, it also saw a rise in popularity among American workers as a result of its proximity to major markets. By World War I, however, Fulton had begun to decline as manufacturing declined and real estate prices rose; by 1930, it had shrunk to just over 3,000 people. Despite this decline, however, it retains some significant historical elements: including its large population of African Americans (who made up more than 60% of the population at that point), its role as an important center for black culture (particularly music and theater), and its history as a center for cotton production
Fulton was founded by a group of farmers in 1824. The town became the capital of Missouri in 1827, and it served as the state's second capital from 1829 to1833. In 1865, Fulton was removed from Missouri to Alabama due to its voting rights being disputed with Jefferson City.
