Fulton, Missouri is a town in northwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,651 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Hastings County, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fulton" may come from French for "place where the river flows". It was founded by fur traders in 1827 and named after Sir George Fulton, 1st Baronet. Fulton was platted on May 8, 1827 by surveyors George Kline and Jacob Bakewell. When it became a town in 1837 it had a population of 274 people. In 1840 the population reached 556 people; however this number decreased to 2,651 by the 2010 census. The first store in Fulton was built on Main Street in 1834 by James Fenton and Wm. Kingman. A post office called Fulton was established on January 6, 1830., and remained in operation until February 3, 1865 when it changed its name to Hastings Springs Post Office because Hastings County had become an incorporated municipality that year In 1861 General Alfred Pemberton's army invaded Kansas Territory during the American Civil War and burned most of Wichita before retreating westward into Indian Territory. This event led to increased settlement around Wichita due to fears of future raids In 1863 Helena Garrison married John Sibley at First Presbyterian Church in Fulton which made her one of only two women who were admitted to membership in that church at that time A school opened at Trinidad Baptist Church on December 25th, 1863 which taught white children about Christianity while black children learned about home cooking Blair Hospital opened its doors on March 17th 1865 as Wichita’s first hospital with medical help from England There were also several smallpox cases reported around this time including one case reported on April 4th which killed three people near Westport Road near what is now Callaway Farms

Fulton was a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States before the opening of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. The act designated the lands east of the Red River as part of Nebraska, and thus Fulton became one of many towns in eastern Missouri to lose their land status. The town was founded by Captain James Moultrie on July 8, 1836, just after the admission of Missouri into the Union as a slave state. Moultrie had come from Kentucky to fight for slavery and become its first general agent in what would become known as the Great Migration. He arrived with his family at Independence on July 11 and soon began building cabins for himself and his men. Moultrie's decision to establish a community near Independence led him to be selected as captain of a wagon train that traveled from St Joseph, Illinois to Leavenworth Junction on December 12, 1836. In his memoirs, Moultrie wrote about this trip: "We were now about twelve hundred miles distant from home - but it felt nothing like being so far away." The wagon train encountered difficulties on its way including an attempt by General Robert E. Lee to cross the Red River without getting wet – an event which is still remembered by Americans today as one of history's most dramatic achievements. Fulton grew rapidly during this time due to farmers coming down from Kansas Territory with new methods for growing crops and creating markets for goods produced in Eastern Missouri. By 1840, there were over 100 households living in Fulton; by 1845 that number had increased to 350 people. When Kansas Territory was organized into states within America following World War II, Fulton retained its status as a town; however it has since lost much of its population due to suburban development and other economic changes throughout recent decades.
