Fulton is a city in the US state of Missouri, founded in 1836. It is seat to the Fulton County government and has a population of over 121,000 as of 2019. The city was originally named for General James K. Polk, who served as United States president from 1841 to 1845 and as military governor of Missouri during the Mexican–American War. The first resident was James McGillivray, an Englishman who arrived in 1836 with his family and started a ferry service between Fulton and St. Louis. The town grew quickly because of its location on the Mississippi River at the headwaters of the Osage River; this made it easy for goods to be transported through Illinois into Missouri and then Kansas City, which had been founded by Major John Brown weeks earlier. In 1840, when Abraham Lincoln became president, he ordered General Stephen Ayer to relocate all Ulysses S Grant's troops from Springfield north to Fulton so that they could help disarm (or capture) Confederate forces retreating from Vicksburg after their failed attack on that port September 9th. The town also became known for its cotton plantations; these were acquired by local investors starting in the early 1800s due to good soil conditions and low prices on imported crops elsewhere in America. By 1860, there were more than 100 plantations here employing some 4500 workers (a third of whom were women). The production ended around World War I but some remained until near- vanishing during Prohibition years when most fields were burned or used for chemical production only. In 1945, following World War II bombings by the USAAF based at nearby Mound Bayou airfield (), many small businesses closed down due to famine brought about by high levels of lead exposure in those days post-war Rust Belt cities like Flint Michigan (). After much searching through census data compiled over 50 years later (), it was determined that only 2% (of current population) actually lived within 1 mile (1 km) of Mound Bayou before 1945 due mostly to farming operations rather than residential growth rates; however large tracts now lie within well-maintained neighborhoods such as "Old Town" () today's downtown Fulton concentrations began again slowly increasing with modest single family detached homes being built accidentally or intentionally throughout 1960s thru 1980s displacing numerous small businesses along Center Street NE (& similar streets historically), while Oakwood Cemetery continued undeveloped until recently.....

The case against him was tried before the Ulysses S. Grant–led National Executive Committee but failed due to lack of evidence; he was acquitted on all counts after a lengthy trial which ended with an acquittal on September 3,1877—an event which has been cited as one of the first steps towards American Reconstruction following the Civil War (Grant became president four months later). He is also known for leading America into World War I through his activities as commissioner at sea (he successfully negotiated Great Britain’s entry into war) and as chairman of President Woodrow Wilson’s presidential cabinet during World War I (he unsuccessfully opposed military alliances developed by Germany). In 1924–1925 he served as ambassador to Russia (his third such assignment), becoming famous for proposing a resolution authorizing American military intervention if Russia violated international law during that year’s Bolshevik Revolution there; this proposal failed but helped secure passage of a United Nations Charter that same year.)
