During World War II, Florissant played an important role in developments that led to St. Louis becoming an Allied city and engaging in combat against Nazi Germany and Italy respectively; many locals also served in military service during this time period or later returned home to help rebuild their towns after the war ended. Florissant remains an agricultural community with significant production of corn and soybeans; however, other types of crops are also grown such as wheat and cottonseed while some recreational activities (such as hunting) still take place nearby like swimming at Aiken's Mill Pond located upstream from town limits on State Route 33E between Florissant and Bellefontaine Mills

The Florissant area has been inhabited by the Shawnee people for many years. A post office called Florissant was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1879, Elijah Hicks built a cabin on a hill overlooking Florissant from his farmstead near what is now US-27 and US-6A. Hicks became known as "the Father of Florissant." In 1886, Judge William Denton purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) of land north of the current town center from James Whitehead for $5 per acre. This land formed what would eventually become North Park Township. 2 miles east of Florissant on present day I-55 Business Loop there was an old logging camp called "Hicksville". In 1898 it burned down due to arson by local boys while settlers were out harvesting firewood. The site stills hosts a Memorial Day picnic which costs $10 per person and includes refreshments such as hot dogs and sandwiches made with local cornmeal
