In the early 1900s, Florissant, Missouri was a small town of about 1,000 people. The town was located on the banks of the Missouri River and it consisted of three main sections: the downtown area, which included the courthouse and a few other buildings; the eastern side of town where most of the residences were; andthe western side which was largely agricultural. The city's only industry was agriculture until 1916 when there was a large increase in production at a new cotton gin located in nearby Rolla. This began to change after World War I when Florissant became an important manufacturing center for firearms. It ran one of two plants for Smith & Wesson firearms before that company went bankrupt in 1928. Thanks to this manufacturing activity, Florissant grew rapidly from its single-town status in the late 1800s into one of America's leading cities by 1920. The population reached 25,000 by 1930, making it one of America's largest cities with a population greater than any other medium-sized city outside New York City and Washington D.C.. In that decade also, Florissant established itself as an important cultural center with several major theaters and museums including the notorious RKO movie theater which is now part of Old Main University School District #2 (MO). During these years, as Florissant developed into one of America's most influential cities, gun control debates raged within its borders. On November 5th 1921 – just four months after passage by Congress of the National Firearms Act – Mayor John Hynes convened what is called "The Gun Ban Rally" on Mount Hope Lawn in front of City Hall to demand action on behalf of his constituents who felt their rights had been violated by government regulation pertaining to handguns. Despite strong opposition from conservatives within City Hall who saw this event as nothing more than another progressive stepping down from power at an eraspringtime when traditional business methods were being challenged (euphemistically called "the Progressive era"), Mayor Hynes hosted this public gathering to show his constituents that he would not back down from anything necessary to protect their Second Amendment rights. Park Superintendent Amos Gentry estimated that up to 10 percentof allFlorissant residents attended or participated in this rally despite lackadaisical warnings from police officers stationed throughout downtown about possible violence ensuing if such an event occurred...[T]he Gun Ban Rally served as a rallying cry for everyday Americans fed up with government bureaucracy and increased taxation without corresponding benefits for ordinary citizens." [1] It should be noted that while much has changed since 1921 – particularly regarding gun control laws – Mayor Hynes' move remains significant because it set forth some principles which continue to guide Florissant today: First and foremost among these principles is insistence upon jurisdiction over personal firearm possession within city limits; secondarily, municipalities must take measures to ensure public safety through means such as aggressive law enforcement; finally, municipalities have discretion over how they will respond to potential threats posed by firearms rather than following overly constricting regulations promulgated by centralized administrations

A millinery shop opened in 1848 which became one of the most important economic hubs in the community until it closed its doors effective 1960s due to competition from more modern industry within St. Louis County In 1860 Florissant had 7 stores and 2 blacksmiths while only 5 people lived here according to the 1870 census A post office was established at Florissant on November 15th 1865 by JF Smith with P M Morse as clerk On October 25th 1876 a fire destroyed most of downtown Florissant leaving only 3 blocks of buildings standing The first schoolhouse building was erected on what is now Elm Street near Main Street around 1875 The first store building was erected on Main Street just east of Poplar Street around 1880 In 1895 Community Development District No 1 formed with 4 acres purchased from Ransom Hennepin for $8 per acre In 1901 School #2 (later renamed Community High School) opened adjacent to First Baptist Church with 4 classrooms and 30 students . In 1906 Second Baptist Church also opened nearby . As our population grew we needed new schools so original Elementary School plat #1/Alameda Drive was sold for $7500 dollars to build Memorial Gymnasium which served our community until 1978 . This building still stands today and can be entered through its portals directly above Memorial Park
