In 1840-41 (during Pea Ridge War), Captain John Smedley of the 1st U.S Cavalry Regiment engaged Indian forces from the Fort Donelson garrison at or near present-day Florissant while transporting goods and supplies back and forth between Fort Donelson and Springfield ahead of General Scott's army advancing through central Missouri towards Lawrence on July 6th-8th of that year. The battle resulted in three deaths among American soldiers including William Floyd who lost an arm at this engagement;[1] however no injuries were reported on either side Castile or Stephens.[2] For most of its history until well into the 20th century much of what now makes up Florissant came from unproductive farmlands purchased by settlers during various periods of growth throughout Saint Louis County – as early as 1800s when developers began purchasing large tracts along routes providing easy access to transportation improvements such as canalside railroads connecting St Louis with points farther away like Kansas City or Illinois). In 1865, J H Warner opened a general store at the corner of Main Street and Elmira Road which became one of the largest stores east of Kansas City until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1898, P C Palmer opened his grocery store at 8th Street and Elmira Road which remains one of town's most popular businesses to this day. The growth of downtownFlorissant during this time led to construction of several buildings including: First Baptist Church (1898), Masonic Temple (1901), Town Hall (1906), Central High School (1909), courthouse (1911- 1912), and bank building(1920). One significant development during this time was the addition of baseball diamonds across Main Street between First Avenue South and 2nd Avenue South which would become home to many local teams over the years such as: The Florissants (1900-1920), Knights Of Columbus/St Josephs Baseball Club(1920-present), Chicago White Sox/Oklahoma City Dodgers/Kansas City Cardinals(1970s-1980s)
In 1871, Florissant was founded by Captain Elijah K. Bowen and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the local flower, which he had seen while exploring the area. The town grew quickly and in 1886 it had a population of 100 people. By 1912, Florissant had a population of 350 people and in 1916 it became an city. In 1946, Florissant was renamed to Independence because of its status as an independent city within the Missouri state government.
