Florissant is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was founded by Captain James Fenton and his wife Martha on November 8, 1834, as a result of the Mexican-American War. Fenton homesteaded in what is now Florissant and died there in 1868 while serving as captain of the Missouri First Regiment during the American Civil War. His widow continued to live there until her death in 1901. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Florissant and pronounced it "a very beautiful place". He also noted that both men who had fought there were buried nearby within walking distance of each other: General John A. McClernand's remains are located just east of Florissant's courthouse square; Union general Nathaniel Prentiss' remains are located west of town square across from Florissant's post office building). This former slave community served as an important stop for Union troops retreating from Vicksburg after that city was captured by Confederate forces on July 4, 1863; many slaves here escaped or were liberated during this time. The town was abandoned shortly thereafter when Union soldiers retreated back into Illinois due to Confederate advances southward through Kansas City and Springfield proper (which then became Missouri City). However some small businesses such as a grocery store lasted until about 1870 when local farmers started raising crops inland instead When Kansas City exploded with growth due to railroad development throughout central Missouri following World War I, much like Springfield did before it during Reconstruction era periods preceding it (and even longer afterwards), FlorISSANT effectively disappeared again although various remnants can still be found today scattered around rural St Francois County..
