Florissant is named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the Mexican-American War and Battle of Buena Vista Hill. The first settlers in Florissant were farmers and their families who arrived around 1853 from Virginia. They started a small farm on the west side of town which they called "The Farm". In 1865, Charles Hargrave moved to Florissant and bought land east of town from John Aiken for $10 per acre (1/4 mile²). He began to cultivate that land and built a house on it which he named "Hargrave's House". In 1867, he married Martha Jane Elliot and they moved to Florissant. Their children included: Charles Hargrave (1868-1944), Edwin Hargrave (1870-1964), Nellie Hargrave (1872-1946), Donald Waring Hargrade (1874-1948), Ada Ellen Hargrade (1876-1965), Alice Everett Higgins(1878-) In 1877, George Stephenson settled in Florissant with his family from Kentucky. They platted out what would become known as Stephenson Heights after George Stephenson who had financed much of the original development in Kansas City suburb Ravenswood Park. The first home on Stephenson Heights was built by him and his wife Mary Jane in 1879. Over time other families followed suit until there were over 20 homes scattered throughout what became known as Stephenson Heights including 11 groceries stores, 12 restaurants, 2 schools, 1 Masonic Lodge #5 & Shrine Temple #2 & 3 & 4 etc., 7 doctor offices& 2 hospitals etc…. [Today] only 2 residences remain on Stephenson Heights –owned by descendants of those early pioneers: Mrs. Rufus Yates’s Home Number 5A (#623) which she restored following damage done by a storm in 1978; Mrs.. Anna Easley’s Home Number 624 (#634) which still houses her kitchen stove replica; also remaining are 3 garage doors plus one window from Mrs.. Fannie McConnell’s home during World War II.] In 1912 William Craine founded Craine Bros meat market across from Post Office building where today you can find remnants of an old post office mural still extant inside! In 1915, Florissant had two grocery stores and 12 businesses when it lost its post office to Liberty. The last post office closed in 1967 when the town became an independent city. In 1960, Florissant annexed part of Independence City which had a population of 781 people during that year's censuses; this annexation added an additional 191 residents to Florissants total population of 1,551 people as of the 2010 census
