Maplewood Elementary closed in 1951 and all students were transferred to Central while still eating lunch at their homes or local churches until 1975 when a new elementary school complex was built across Euclid Avenue from central school that replaced both MaplewoodElementary Schools as well as older academic buildings on Elm Street between Highland Park Road and Missouri avenues which date back to 1856 (when MOstatehood decreeed that all public schools be built within two blocks of each other). Central also served as a high school for many years until it closed in 2009 due to budget cuts following suburban consolidation throughout StLouis County which has resulted in an increased number of low income families attending high schools outside urban areas thereby reducing need for traditional rural secondary education providers such as Central High School however there are plans currently underway by some educators within Central HS District #2 withinMOto reopen as an online charter school under title Paul Bunyan Academy next door at 7500 Independence Ave Ste 210 after Federal judge halts reopening because he found no evidence that will improve educational opportunities for students living near MLK Jr Boulevard & I-55

Florissant was founded in 1835 by John and Emma Green. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first established. In 1841, the town became part of St. Louis County. In 1847, Florissant was renamed after General James H. Florissant who served in the Mexican-American War and as a U.S. Army general during the American Civil War. The Florissant High School opened in 1861 and is now known as Missouri State University's Florissant Campus.
