Florissant is a town in Indianola County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1839 by the Lipan Apache Indians. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. Florissant is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Florissant was French trader François de Laclède in 1764. He named it "L'Isle aux Meadows" after his friend and mentor Jacques Marquette who had visited this area earlier that year. In 1806, John Czarnecki claimed land east of Florissant on the White River for Illinois Territory before its creation as the State of Missouri. On July 3, 1837, a group of settlers led by Captain George Rogers Clark arrived at Florissant and erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first school in Florissant opened in September 1838 with three students from Stroudsburg Township taught by Reverend James Laddsbury from nearby Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. A second school opened in 1840 with six students from Highland Township taught by William Hetzel from Stroudsburg Township. In 1840, General Harrison sold 7 acres (27 ha) east of town to Davenport inhabitants for $1 per acre when he moved his army westward during the Kansas-Nebraska War. This site became home to eastern bound wagons unloaded at the new Hannibal Bridge over the White River outside present day downtownFlorissant on August 10th,1841 just days after Missouri's admission into Union as a state on April 12th following a long and bloody battle between Confederate forces and Union forces under Ulysses S Grant near Vicksburg Mississippi A post office called "Pine Bluff" was established at Florissant in May 1840; it closed operations on October 15th 1850 due to lack of mail service to rural areas within Indianola County.. In 1851 local citizen Edward Armour donated land north of town along South Main Street which became Armstrong Park; this park has been continuously occupied since then by local residents including various schools and businesses including Armstrong Air Force Base which occupies an entire block south side of Armstrong Park just west of Main Street

During World War II, Florissant was one of the most heavily bombed cities in America, with over 80% of its buildings destroyed.
