Fremont and his wife Mary Lyon Fremont. The first post office for Florissant was opened in 1837 and remained open until it closed in 1903. In 1855, Captain Fremont donated land to build a school which became known as Florissant School House No 1. The first building on this site was built with logs and named "Fremont's Fort". The fort served as a school until 1861 when it became an arsenal and storehouse under General Lewis Cass's command during the American Civil War. In 1865, General Ulysses S. In 1860, Florissant became one of thirteen towns in what is now Kansas Territory; however, it did not join that territory until 1863 when it became part of Bleeding Kansas under Union Army rule following a civil war victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Wilson's Creek (February 14). By 1865, Florissant had shrunk to about 100 residents; nevertheless, it continued to be an important center for trade and commerce throughout much of the mid-19th century due to its location near major eastern markets such as St Louis andKansas City as well as its access to wagon roads leading southward into Missouri Territory (now Oklahoma)
