Florissant, Missouri is a town in St. Louis County, Missouri. The population was 7,018 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Florissant was founded by white farmers in 1836 and named for Flora Lewis, wife of Captain James Lewis of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The town was organized as a city on November 1, 1907 and became an independent municipality on January 1, 1912. The first post office in Florissant was built in 1836 and reopened on March 3, 1837 under the name "Bentonville." In 1838 it changed its name to "Flemish Village," after Captain John Fenton who had been appointed Postmaster at that time. In 1857 Florissant had a population of 500 people and a schoolhouse which served as both public and private schools until 1865 when it became an academy with separate admission privileges for men and women which remain extant to this day. In 1865-1868 two new stores were opened in what is now downtown Florissant by General Julius Custer's brother-in-law Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1793-1875). These stores are still open today as cultural relics known collectively as the K Street Shopping District or simply K Street. In 1896 Florissant had 963 residents; by 1910 it had grown to 2,362 with 8 churches (of which 5 wereMethodist) and over 100 businesses including 13 banks and 21 grocery stores providing food services to the community center while also serving as social institutions such as libraries or art societies during prohibition times when alcoholic beverages were not allowed sale inside most municipal buildings except for speakeasies outside business district limits where they could be purchase commercially On November 1st 1907 City Council voted 6-0 to annex neighboring towns of Emporia (population 2,586) & Poplar Bluff (2,531), thus giving form to annexation plans that summer evening by local politicians seeking political advantages from annexation while ignoring complaints from those communities about being taken advantage of through incorporation without their consent . On January 1st 1912 Mayor Auld recommended approval for annexation due primarily to economic reasons since then there would have been no need for village officers attendant at township meetings whereas currently all village ordinances must be approved before they take effect . After much discussion Assistant County Attorney Harry Smeaton filed suit challenging county ordinance banning city incorporation but lost on December 12th 1913 when Circuit Judge Randal Fiske ruled against him because he did not have jurisdiction over the matter having only handled state court cases . With no other option available townspeople voting overwhelmingly reapproved incorporation becoming one of America's fastest growing cities with more than 10% growth each year until 1970 when Growth Management Corporation purchased all assets including incorporated Village Limits completely cutting off any potential future growth followed by 6 consecutive years of -2%. Today little remains but historic architecture associated with early 20th centuryFlorissant while commercial development dominates modern day streetscape

The town of Florissant, Missouri was founded in 1837 by John and Emma Beard. The Beards were a family of settlers who came to the area in search of new land. They purchased 640 acres of land east of Florissant on the Potomac River. The town was named for their home, Florissant, England. The first settler to arrive in Florissant was Amos Earp, who arrived in 1838. For many years, Florissant sat atop a hill above the river because it offered a good view. In 1853, the town was moved from its original location to what is now its current location due to flooding caused by the Mississippi River. The town changed hands several times before it settled into what is now known asFlorissant Township on November 3, 1857. In 1860, William Tappan founded a tannery in Florissant and became one of the early residents of the community. In 1865, James Waddell erected a log cabin at present-day corner Main and West streets in order to provide more housing for his workers during the early days of agriculture in this region. By 1870, there were around 100 people living inFlorissant with some 20 businesses active within that circle. By 1890, agricultural production had become dominant among local businesses and an increasing number of families were moving into towns throughout Missouri due to booming farm yields along with advances in transportation and communication technologies such as Electricity and Telegraphs (the first telephone line went up in Florissant). However, at this point Wall Street crashed which led to mass unemployment throughout much of America during these difficult times – not only did farmers lose their jobs but also many shopkeepers closed their doors as well leaving residents unsupported financially until Telephone companies like Bell & Howell started providing employment opportunities for locals once again after WWI ended those job losses/incomes stagnation beginning about 1920.) 1) By 1910 there were over 350 people living ashoretown with most being employed within various commercial enterprises such as grocery stores or newspapers; 2) Many residents bought homes either near downtown or along highway routes leading away from town thereby becoming trapped between rapidly developing areas inside or outside city limits; 3) Primary industries underwent rapid transformation following World War I including automobiles manufacturing plants which quickly replaced earlier horse-drawn wagons used for transportation purposes; 4) Residential development resumed afterWWII boom period culminated with increased demand for housing—-many homeowners decided they no longer wanted children living close by so they built detached houses on acreage located inland or outside city limits while others took advantage of tax breaks available through state government handouts called “ suburban sprawl” 5) Newborns born within city limits received better care than older babies born out side urban boundaries until around 1970 when suburban births began overtaking city births once again
In 1838, Florissant was founded by Andrew Jackson and his brother James on a small ranch that now makes up the majority of the city. The city's first store was built in 1840. In 1861, Florissant became a town after it was surveyed from land donated by father Jacob Krieger. By 1865, the population of Florissant had reached 461 people. In 1881, St. Louis Electric Railway began service to Florissant and other villages along its route. This stimulated development in the city as businesspeople came to see what could be done near the new electric lines. By 1890, Florissant had a population of 612 people and became an incorporated municipality under state law. TheFlorissant Civic Center opened in 1967 as the first municipally-owned open-air mall in Missouri. It served as a downtown shopping area for residents until 1991 when it closed down due to economic problems and redevelopment efforts elsewhere in town have failed to materialize
