A cotton gin was built in 1886 and a sawmill in 1889. In 1916, Florissant had 2 churches and 10 businesses; by 1928 it had 4 churches and 20 businesses. During World War II, Florissant produced munitions for the German military forces at nearby Mound City; by 1945 it had 7 churches and 50 businesses. In 1951, 1% of all business activity in Clay County came from Florissant; by 1996 that figure had fallen to 0%. The population of Florissant peaked at around 100 people in 1940; however it slowly declined until its present size of around 30 people. Today there is only one church remaining standing from when there were many more: St John's Episcopal Church which is located on Main Street next to the old cotton gin building that still stands today

After the war, Florissant slowly began to decline as its manufacturing sector declined and many residents moved away. However, because of its unique history and proximity to other major cities, Florissant has retained some of its locally-based businesses and cultural attractions today.
