Florissant, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Florissant is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Florissant was Levi Graves who came from Kentucky in 1839 and platted the town on land he had purchased from the village of Florissant on the Blue River. The name given to the town by its initial settlers was "Fernvale." A post office called Fernvale was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded a military academy at Florissant which became known as Forrest Military Academy. In 1865, when Union General Pemberton arrived to take command of all Confederate forces east of the Mississippi River, he ordered his cavalry commander John Buford to march southward through Florissant with orders to burn down all buildings and plantations along the way. However, Buford halted his march at Florissant instead and made his way back to Corinth with enough supplies for several days before continuing on his journey northward. On November 5th 1865 two men were shot dead while working for Wabash Railroad across from where present day Interstate 44 joins I-435 near milepost 12 eastern boundary of Town limits; this event would become known as "The Shooting atFlorissanty." One manhunt ensued but no arrests were made after weeks of inquiry including an inspection of all railroad crossings near that point by local sheriff James Hickey...It has been speculated that members of local white supremacist group 'The Order' may have been responsible for both murders due their connections with this business venture By year's end there had been zero criminal activity reported within miles radius Of townsfolk still questioning what happened that night.- St Louis Post Dispatch (November 10 1865) On December 2nd 1865 George Washington Beach left work early while driving home from getting some groceries at a store located one mile west of where present day I-44 meets US Highway 64 just south of milepost 11 eastern boundary Of town limits & crossed into Indian Territory on private road leading thereto when rifleman named Samuel Jorgensen opened fire striking Mr Beach 3 times; Beach died instantly & Jorgensen ran off into Indian Territory before police could arrive beach's body lay uncollected for over 6 months until it was discovered by Agent William Treadway late last year (1888) Thereafter small protests began every year anniversary or such occurrence starting January 1st until current.(Interstate 44 Business Journal November 15th 2008) A memorial service honoring Beach was held at Maplewood Cemetery on May 20th 2009

In 1860, General John Custer's brigade arrived at Florissant on their way to the Battle of Bull Run and stopped there for the night. General Custer's battalion had march all day from Fort Gibson eastward and were very tired when they reached Florissant; he spent the night here with his command. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1870 by Hiram Beall and James Griggs. The townspeople started using these mills to produce flour for local markets until World War II when demand for flour diminished nationwide due to wartime production quotas set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt
