Florissant is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Founded by German immigrants in 1855, Florissant was named for Flora, one of eleven children of Johann Gottlieb Flora and his wife Catharine (née Kling). In 1859, the Florissants sold their land to a group of investors who renamed the town "Belleville." A post office was established at Belleville in 1860, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1925. In 1865, two brothers named John W. and Hiram Hixon bought 640 acres (248 hectares) east of Belleville from the investors. They developed this land into what is today known as Florissant Township. John W. Hixon served as mayor from 1868 to 1870; he also owned interest in the local sawmill and gristmill. In 1872, he married Anna Lappin; they had six children: Eliza Jane (1875-1964), Harry Edwin (1877-1951), John Wesley (1879-1971), Anna Louise (1881-1963), Jameson Lewis (1883-1965), and Mildred Fenton Hixon (1885-1976). The first courthouse in Florissant was built on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets in 1870; it served as the court house until it closed its doors in 1924. A new courthouse was built on State Route 71 south of town between 1950 and 1951; it served as the court house again until its closure in 1984. After years of discussion among members ofthe community about building a school district for all residents of Florissant Township regardless of income levels or school attendance rates, an act passed by the General Assembly on April 15, 1907 authorized creation of a public school district that would include all residents withinFlorissant Township with incomes up to $30 per week ($240 per yearToday). On December 10th 1909 students from all schools withinthe newly created school district gathered together at Belvidere Methodist Episcopal Church for lunch after morning services to inaugurate their new center located just northwestof town off High School Road/State Route 71Plymouth Park Elementary School
