Florissant was founded in 1837 by a group of farmers who left Independence, Missouri to come to the area. The town grew quickly and soon became a center for trade and commerce. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Florissant also served as the location of several local schools and churches. The town experienced significant growth during the middle years of the 19th century, thanks in part to its close ties with surrounding communities. However, after the Panic of 1857 hit Missouri, Florissant struggled to keep up with the increased demand for goods and services. By 1870, however, things had started to change in Florissant- although it still remained an agricultural community - as new businesses began opening up in town that would help contribute to its continued growth. During this time, Florissant also achieved some notable milestones: It became the first city in Missouri to be granted a charter from the state government; it was named one of America's "Top 10" tourist destinations for women; and it hosted the very first rodeo in America. Despite these accomplishments, however, by 1900 Florissant had developed into a largely small-town environment which didn't enjoy much success during times of economic recession. In 1935, however, things began to change when Charlie Brown opened his own grocery store in town and helped spur an increase in business activity within Florissant itself as well as throughout nearby towns. Over time, this led to more people moving into Florissant from other parts of Missouri and neighboring states; this has helped make it one of the most vibrant cities in St Louis County today.
