Florissant is a small farming town located on the east bank of the Florissant River between Florissant and Mount Vernon townships. The first settler in what became Florissant was Abraham Hosea Watkins who arrived in 1837 and named it after his friend and neighbor, Elijah Parish Willingboro, in New Jersey. In 1846, Isaac Perkins donated to the United States government a grant of land for a school and church in what would become Florissant. On December 12th of that year residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Township of Florissant." On February 17th 1870, they voted again to incorporation as a city with its own mayor and council. The first post office established in Florissant was called "Henderson" after Jno Henderson who served as postmaster from November 15th 1865-May 3rd 1866. The first Mayor Samuel Dillingham was elected on November 8th 1870; he served until March 6th 1871 when he resigned due to illness before being reelected on April 2nd by popular vote over James Worthy who had run unopposed. On May 3rd 1871 Henderson's successor John Fenton opened the new post office which remained open until 1978 when it closed because of budget cuts by then Governor Richard Moller. As early as 1840s farmers were raising chickens for egg production near present day Mount Vernon Road where one road becomes known as "Henderson Road". By 1860 there were four or five miles long chicken runs stretching out into several rural districts near present day FlorissANTon including: Mount Vernon Township (now Jefferson County), Manchester Township (now Dunkirk), White Sands Township (now Callaway), Steele Township (now West Plains), Dickenson Township (now Bloomfield Hills) and Grandview Township (now Lenexa). Many other farms also raised chickens but Ayrshire Farms grew up around this particular Chicken Run due to their location next door to another major farm family - de laPorte & Company which ran an elevator transportation system bringing eggs from these local farms directly to larger markets like Columbia City where they were sold off orprocessed into chocolates
